It's been a little while since I have sent you a newsletter. Many of you have very kindly told me that you missed this and I hope to say that I will be picking this back up. My wife very kindly has also consistently told me to write more about From Opelika (she's always very supportive). I started this project two years ago to write community updates, ideas, and stories. At one point we did walkabouts every Tuesday morning. Those came to an end (or hopefully just an extended pause), however, I have always liked the idea of doing a newsletter plus organizing community events. So why not jump into a big one? Starting October 1st through the 30th, I am organizing 30 days of prayer for the city of Opelika. This will be a corporate prayer gathering held at the fountain in downtown Opelika (for more info on the event itself click the link above). In this newsletter I want to talk about the why behind 30 days of prayer. Why pray for 30 days? For many years now prayer has been an important center piece to my journey. I can tell you lots of stories of how God showed up for me. Ways that he provided for me, comforted me, and taught me through prayers. Though many times I've treated prayer like a genie in a bottle, I've learned over the years that it is far more of a relationship builder with the God of the universe. 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
- 2 Chronicles 7:14
The more that I have humbled myself - not a fun exercise, by the way - the more the LORD has healed my metaphorical land...the more He has made things new for me. However, this verse was not written as a metaphor. God, through Solomon, was actually talking about His people and their land. So why not humble ourselves, be forgiven, and let God heal our land? If He's willing to do it for the Israelites why wouldn't He do it for us? So to answer the question more directly: Why 30 days of prayer? So that God might heal our land. Heal our land of the consequences of sin. Heal our land of division. Heal our land of foolishness. -Garrison P.S. If you like this story it'd mean the world to me if you'd share it with some friends. Also, if you have an idea or want to write a story just reply to this email. :) Thanks to Abby Snelling for reading drafts of this. |
